[세계영화의 모습] 마노지 바르푸자리 감독의 '부활의 방식', 멸종 위기의 언어 살리기

기타리 사이키아(Gitali Saikia) & 암릿 사이키아(Amrit Saikia) 공동 제작, 마노지 바르푸자리(Manoj Barpujari) 감독의 '부활의 방식'(Mode of Revival, 45분)을 소개한다. 영화평론가 장석용은 촬영 현장을 직접 방문하였으며 출연 배우들과 이야기를 나누었다. 영화감독 마노지 바르푸자리가 보내온 간단한 줄거리를 한국 최초로 소개한다. '부활의 방식'은 전주국제영화제에 출품될 예정이다.
[시놉시스]

20명 남짓한 사람들만이 사용하는 캄양어는 심각한 멸종 위기에 처한 언어이다. 동남아시아 전역에 퍼져 있는 타이 카다이어족에 속하며, 아삼 동부에 거주하는 불교 소수 민족의 언어이다. 이 다큐멘터리 '부활의 방식'은 캄양어족의 몇몇 주요 활동가들이 인도의 유일한 단음절 언어인 캄양어를 멸종 위기에서 구하기 위해 최선을 다하는 모습을 담고 있다. 젊은이들이 어른들에게 모국어를 배우고, 노래를 연습하고, 연극을 하는 등 언어 부활의 새로운 장이 열린다. 영화에는 부게스와르 토우뭉과 같은 80대 원로 화자와 멜버른 대학교의 스티븐 모리 교수와 같은 헌신적인 언어학자들이 출연한다.

Spoken by hardly 20 people, the Khamyang is a critically endangered language. It falls in the large Tai Kadai language family spread across South East Asia and belongs exclusively to a Buddhist ethnic tribe of eastern Assam domicile. The documentary 'Mode of Revival' captures how a few leading activists from the community are trying their best to save India’s only monosyllabic language from extinction. A new chapter in the process of language revival is heralded, with youngsters learning their mother tongue from elders and by practicing songs, enacting a play etc. The film casts native octogenarian speakers like Bhugeswar Thowmung and dedicated linguists like Prof. Stephen Morey of Melbourne University, besides others.
